This young American actress and singer is best known for her portrayal of Alex Russo on the Emmy Award winning Disney Channel Original Series, Wizards of Waverly Place. Her band, Selena Gomez and the Scene, released their debut studio album in September 2009 and it was certified Gold by RIAA in March 2010.
Born in Grand Prairie, Texas, Selena's father is Mexican American and her mother is of half Italian descent. Her parents divorced when she was five years old, and she was raised as an only child by her working mother, who remarried in 2006. The 17-year-old star began her acting career at age seven, playing Gianna on Barney and Friends.

In August 2009, Selena became the youngest UNICEF ambassador ever, at age 17. In her first official field mission, she traveled to Ghana in September 2009 for a week to witness first-hand the stark conditions of vulnerable children that lack vital necessities including clean water, nourishment, education, and healthcare. She said during an interview with Associated Press that she wanted to use her star power to bring awareness to Ghana and help these children.
